George Washington This rare portrait of George Washington was engraved from an original picture by David Edwin

George Washington

The 1st President of the United States served from 1789 to 1797. George Washington was born in February 22, 1732 near Fredericksburg, VA, and died December 14, 1799 at Mount Vernon, VA.

The Autograph Book provides two rare engraved portraits of Washington, and a signed voucher.

The first portrait was created by prominent American engraver, David Edwin.

The second portrait is a steel plate engraving that was taken from a book published by D. Appleton & Company called The Presidents of the United States, 1789-1898. It is similar to Washington's portrait on the dollar bill because both were based on a Gilbert Stuart portrait.

The voucher was issued on August 7th, 1786 by the Potomac Company for expenses incurred by Thomas Boylan, who was an Overseer of the company. The voucher states that "Thomas Boylin [sic] was out five or six days after ser-vants". The voucher was handwritten and signed by James Rumsey, the company superintendent. Rumsey later became a pioneer in the field of steamboat technology. The voucher is in this book because it was also signed by George Washington, who at the time was President of the Potomac Company. The signatures next to Washington's are those of three company Directors - John Fitzgerald, Thomas Sim Lee, and George Gilpin. John Fitzgerald previously served as colonel of the Virginia Militia, Thomas Sim Lee later became the second Governor of Maryland, and George Gilpin was a life-long friend of Washington and one of six pallbearers at his funeral.
